UniFi: Whole Home Wireless Networking with Protect.

A game changer when it comes to working from home, with unrivalled network performance and functionality.

This project began back in early June when we were approached by a client with complaints of poor wireless internet performance in the home and in an outbuilding that’s regularly used as an art studio. This was important as the client was extensively working from home. In addition to which, the wireless home security cameras were constantly disconnecting and with an upgrade to the homes network infrastructure, this was the perfect opportunity to integrate new cameras into the build.

An internet connection upgrade was also factored in. Utilising our knowledge and contacts with Wireless Internet providers, and as the client was at the edge of a Fibre to the Cabinet area, speeds never exceeded 18 Mbps down and 1.5 Mbps up with unexpected drop outs. Now though, utilising Ubiquiti Airfiber point to point technology, the customer now sees speeds of over 100Mbps down and 25Mbps up. All delivered from a mast around 12 km away.

The project was completed in 2 stages. The first was laying the network infrastructure and installing Whole Home Wi-Fi using Ubiquiti’s Dream Machine Pro, four AC Pro access points, and two PoE switches. The reason for the high number of access points was due to the house being extended in various stages, this had resulted in numerous stone and concrete walls that hampered wireless range. These had to be standalone devices, each with dedicated wired back hauls as the previous wireless mesh system suffered serious signal degradation after each hop.

The access points were discretely installed in various areas around the property including one outside access point to broadcast wireless out into the studio outbuilding. Upon testing after the installation we were amazed to see that local link speeds from devices around all areas of the property ranged from 150 Mbps all the way up to 995 Mbps.

The second stage was the installation of 6 UniFi Protect Cameras. 5 of these were G3 Pros and the 6th was a G3 Dome Camera. All of these record 1080p footage at 30 frames per second and all feature infrared night vision and had full coverage of all access areas of the property. These always-on devices constantly record to the Dream Machine Pro’s onboard hard drive and have motion detection alert and event logging functionality to review later on in the Protect controller on mobile devices and laptops. Finally, we installed a UFP ViewPort. A cool PoE powered device with an HDMI port to allow for cameras to be viewed live on a TV in up to 4K resolution.

This has been our largest project to date and one we’re extremely proud of with more exciting updates to come once the internet upgrade has been readied.
